Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The ChAdOx1-nCoV-19 vaccine (also known as AZD1222, Vaxzevria, or Covishield) is a replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus-vectored vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. The vaccine utilizes the ChAdOx1 viral vector to deliver the genetic sequence of the full-length, non-stabilized SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoprotein. Upon intramuscular administration, host cells express the spike protein, which triggers the production of neutralizing antibodies and cellular immune responses against SARS-CoV-2. It was widely authorized and distributed globally during the COVID-19 pandemic, but was voluntarily withdrawn from global markets in May 2024 due to a decline in demand and a surplus of updated variant-specific vaccines.
